The Metropolitan Police Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre is a repository containing a wealth of historical documents as well as hosting a large database containing records of over 60,000 police officers dating back to 1829. Professional archivists and a dedicated team of volunteers are there to assist you if you are looking to search for information as well as helping to ensure that all documents are gathered, filed and then made available electronically.

The fascinating display of records and artefacts cover all areas of policing in London and is kept fresh by rotating some of the 15,000 items from the Metropolitan Police archive. There are uniforms, maps, police equipment and a World War II display. The items available include:

  • The Police Officers nominal database with over 60,000 records of previously served police officers. The details date from 1829 and are continually updated by the team of volunteers
  • The Police Officers Central Records of Service which date back to 1911
  • The Police Officers pension cards of those who have died
  • The Police Officers joiners' and leavers' records, copies of which have been obtained from the National Archive at Kew
  • Divisional Police Officers ledgers giving details of shoulder numbers and previous occupation. It also includes any services with the armed forces and other details of interest
  • Numerous policing subjects and photographic archives

Martin Tiplady, director of human resources for the Met, said: "The Met has so much history it's great to be able to share that with the people we serve."

Kit Malthouse, vice chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority, which gave the green light for the venture said: "The Met collection is a fantastic resource that has for too long been hidden from public view. It encapsulates more than just the physical history of the Met - it charts the development of this great city and the changing face of our society."
